The hit show POSE paid tribute to Venus Xtravaganza who unfortunately was murdered in a hotel room in 1990. Venus Xtravaganza was seen in the LGBT Documentary “Paris Is Burning”. "Paris is Burning" told the stories of LGBTQ people in the ballroom scene during the 1980s-1990s. The documentary told the story of how Venus Xtravaganza survived by escorting and hustling. She was a fearless young trans woman who had dreams of wanting to be free of struggle, pain, and rejection. She wanted to be married and spoiled by the man of her dreams. Venus wanted everything that any person dreams of, she wanted pure happiness.
In the hit t.v show POSE, Co-Star Candy, who is played by actress Angelica Ross was murdered in a hotel room on one of her night outings with a client. The cause of death was the same as Venus. Candy was strangled and left in a sleazy hotel room. Her passing in the show hit fans who have grown to love her. Candy was fearless, funky, strong, and didn't take no for an answer.
Pose’s homage to Venus Xtravanganza shined light on the death of many trans women that are still being attacked and killed today. Candy’s presence and absence in the show created a conversation on how families felt when their loved ones were taken away from them.
The influence that “Paris is Burning” did for the community was raise awareness on HIV/AIDS, the struggles that comes with being gay, and the missed opportunity because of ones sexuality. The documentary also showed an underground world that has influenced pop culture, fashion, and dance. "Paris is Burning" paved the way for POSE to be acknowledged and loved the way it is today.
