Young M.A finally dropped her debut album “Herstory in the making” September 27, 2019, after a three-year break, and I can tell you now that she did not come to play.
Young M.A is representing Brooklyn, New York, and is claiming her throne as the “kween” in this rap game.
The independent artist blew up when her single “OOOUUU” sky rocked on the charts in 2017. The single was heard all over the world, which put her on the map as a fresh new face that is not to be slept on.
As an artist who creates her own lane, her style of rap makes you feel like she is speaking to you personally. Her lyrics and catchy hooks grab your attention when she begins to spit, which separates her from everyone else.
The story that she tells in her album makes it known that she has been where you may have been and seen the things that you may have seen.
The vulnerability throughout this album is open and a looking glass of her life’s journey from struggle to success.
Personally, speaking there are a few albums that I can listen to all the way through. Those artists include J Cole- “2014 Forest hill drive” and “Born Sinner”, Kendrick Lamar- “To Pimp A Butterfly” and “DAMN”., and A$AP Rocky- “LONG.LIVE.A$AP”. Young M. A’s body of work landed on my list.
The album has a significant way of telling a story about Young M.A's adolescence of growing up in Brooklyn as a struggling artist, dealing with the loss of her brother, relationships, and success in the music industry.
M.A went all out for her fans, “Herstory in the making” consists of 21 tracks.
1. “No Mercy (Intro)”
Young M.A decided to drop No Mercy two days before her release date to give her fans a taste of what is in store. The intro started as a buildup and drop with a fire beat. In the song, she said “Took the cold out my heart went and put it on the watch. Middle finger hangin out the Benz, feel like Pac. Spittin on your cameras, bandana with the knot. Competition lookin for me, I was waitin at the top. But ain’t no competition, ain’t no one in my position”. M.A’s strong lead with referencing Pac and the competition that she doesn’t see, shows that she is on her own time, in her on lane, and her own self.
1. “Da Come Up”
M.A spoke on the Ls that she had to take to get to where she is today. In the intro, she said something that really stuck with me, and that was “Taking n***s with me with my eyes closed. I was running like a snot nose.” This really spoke on the blind eye that you can have with the people you associate yourself with. For her, these were the friends that she was planning on taking with her when she finally made it big. But the hook spoke for itself of taking that loss as a blessing when she said “Finessing get back to the work, ain’t no resting. When I caught my L I learned my lesson. Now I count my money, count my blessings.”
2. “BIG”
BIG was the song for the summer, the catchy hook throughout the song “that’s that Big drip Big wrist Big body Big whips Big Glocks Big guap Big notch Big goons’ small problems Big moves”, set the tone of going big on all the moves that you have for yourself and worrying less about some problems that aren’t benefiting your success.
3. “Kold World”
Let me start off by saying that the beat in “kold world” is fire. Throughout the song you hear this creepy twinkly beat leading up to an 808 trap beat when the beat drops. In this song M.A opened up about growing up less fortunate and struggling to make ends meet. “I remember when my pocket only had a twenty and a five. I would go and buy some pizza and some fries. Metro card for the week. Caught the train, ain’t had no ride. Debit card ran out of money, when I swiped, it said “declined”, keepin it a hundred”. This really connected with me, being that I know firsthand what that feels like to struggle financially.
4. “PettyWap”
M.A showed her cocky side in “Pettywap” and made fun of the doubters in her life. “Teacher said you’ll never make it. Turn my textbook to a checkbook. I put food on the table. And I did that without a cookbook.” This track is a song that you can play on a midnight drive when you are feeling yourself. The beat gives off a smooth tunneled beat that you can just vibe too, which goes perfect with Young M. A’s flow.
Now I can’t give the whole album away if you like what you hear to far. Herstory in the making is available on iTunes, Tidal, Spotify, Google Play, YouTube, any music streaming app, you will not be disappointed.
