I am from the worries of getting by and the barely making its
From the times of struggle but the many trials of luck
I am from the love and support by two adults both of the same gender
From one that teaches me about life and the other that just make sure that i'm alright
I am from the in between class that's not too rich and not too poor
But from that class of society that “make it happen”
I am from a generation of the unwoke
from the limited knowledge of our Moor ancestors that once ruled and made this world
The generation of the need of approval of others for security
I am from the constant self esteem check that can often be worn as a watch
As if what is seen on the outside of me is more distracting than the genuine realness that is being portrayed
I am from where the west meets the east coast, where the weather here is a melting pot
I am from the old backyard rhythm of the African bongos
I am from the cookouts and hot summer nights at Anacostia Park
From where on the 4th of July, the sky lights up with sparks of colors that blast from above
I am from the capital of all capitals that lays among many monuments and landmarks
I am from the hair spray and beauty supply stores
From where the perfection of hair is seen as the American Dream
I am from the shameless effect of the little girl with nappy hair that turned to a perm for acceptance
From were straight long hair made you beautiful
“Wow how clueless I was at the age of six”
I am from the perfectly imperfects
From where the flaws that you have makes you the person you are
